Dental caries (Cavity):
Dental caries is an infectious disease caused by acid producing bacteria live inside everyone's mouth. These bacteria produce acid which actually disolve away the tooth structure. The most cost-effective way to fight cavity is through brushing, flossing and regular dental visit.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gum caused by plaque accumulated on the teeth. The symptoms include: redness and swelling of gum, gum bleeding during brushing or flossing. It' can be prevented by brushing, flossing and regular dental visit.
Plaque:
Plaque is a biofilm that builds up on the surface of teeth. It contains bacteria and protein form saliva. Dental plaque contributes to dental caries decay and gum disease.
Periodontitis (Gum disease)
Periodontitis is the inflammatory disease which affects the tissues that surround and support the teeth (the bone and the gum). Periodontitis causes progressive loss of the bone around teeth which might lead to loosening and eventual loss of teeth. You need to see a dentist or periodontist if you believe that you have periodontitis.
Calculus
We are not talking about the course that drive you nuts in college. Calculus is calcified plaque attached to the surface of your teeth. It's the major contributing factor in periodontitis. It is extremely difficult to remove calculus through brushing and flossing. You will need cleaning or deep cleaning (root planing) at a dentist's office to remove calculus.
